ABSTRACT: Two features dominate the energetic balance on Earth: it's a rotating sphere with the energy coming from the outside, and it's immersed in the vacuum of space with the same total emitted as absorbed. The singular difference, on which the seminar will show how the passage of light through the atmosphere translates into a structure that depends on the composition of the gas. The global picture, the driving o circulations, the climatic zones and their extent, all depend on the way the atmospheric structure adjusts to the input of solar radiation and how is lost back to space. Since the process of human-produced global climate change is now fully underway, the talk will concentrate on the mitigation of the global effects, as a preparation for further seminars on the human and environmental impacts of the changes. To state the bottom line before the talk: the climate is already changing and the effects are accelerating, it is not from external forcing, it is largely irreversible, but it can be less bad.
Steve Shore è nato a New York nel 1953; laureato in Scienza dello spazio nel 1974, fino al 1989 è stato direttore del centro di ricerche astrofisiche del New Mexico. Dal 2002 è professore di Astrofisica presso la nostra Università dove ha tenuto insegnamenti anche nel Corso di Laurea in Scienze per la Pace. Nel 1993 ha ricevuto il premio "Distinguished Science Award" dalla NASA e dal 2003 è direttore della rivista di astrofisica "Astronomy and Astrophysics". Oltre a essere autore di oltre 180 pubblicazioni su riviste internazionali in astrofisica, fisica, storia della fisica e matematica, ha scritto 5 libri di astrofisica.
